Every year, 75 million people fall victims to crime in the European Union (EU). Roughly 15% of the EU’s population is yearly the direct victim of criminality. These numbers should set victims’ needs as a priority to EU’s and Member States’ policies. The most recent EU legislation mirrors this perspective.
In order to discuss the recent developments in EU law and policy on victims’ rights and some cross-cutting issues on victimology and criminology, the Portuguese Association for Victim Support (APAV) will promote the Seminar Victims’ Rights: a Step Forward, which will be held on 27th and 28th September, in Lisbon, at the Olissipo Oriente Hotel.
This Seminar will be an opportunity to gather various experts, justice practitioners and NGOs in criminology and victimology fields across Europe, to discuss the challenges ahead, the victims’ perspective and share their experiences and best practices on victim support issues.
The event is organised within the Project CABVIS – Capacity Building for EU crime victim support (2011-2012). Promoted by Victim Support Europe and managed by the Portuguese Association for Victim Support (APAV) and co-financed by the European Commission, under the Programme Criminal Justice – Directorate-Generale Justice, this Project is developed in partnership with the Victim Support Scotland, Slachtofferhulp Nederland, Weisser Ring Germany and Victim Support England & Wales.
