On Wednesday 3rd October 2018, President of Victim Support Europe João Lázaro and the Ambassador of the European Union in the United Nations, João Vale de Almeida, met at the EU Delegation in New York to discuss the EU’s focus on victims of crime beyond the EU and within the UN.
The meeting with Ambassador Vale de Almeida was a great success with opportunities for future co-operation discussed and a firm commitment from the Ambassador to continue and deepen our co-operation together.
VSE’s meeting with Ambassador Vale de Almeida, is part of our ongoing activities to link European priorities with global action.
In particular, the ameeting was triggered by VSE’s first partnership with the European External Action Service where we created short film showcasing good human rights stories in the victims sector.
The video featured interviews with both victims and support workers. The film highlighted the improvements made for people who are victims of crime and how their changes made since the EU adopted a law three years ago (EU Victims Directive) improved their treatment and supported the work of organisations.
The video was screened at a high-level meeting at the UN General Assembly in New York to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is an example of the growing recognition that actions for victims must target all victims as well as specific groups.
