Diletta Marchesi
Diletta Marchesi, Ph.D. is a legal scholar and international criminal lawyer. She earned her Ph.D. in Law at KU Leuven in 2024 as a researcher with the FWO (Research Foundation – Flanders), specialising in international criminal, humanitarian and human rights law. In her doctoral research, she examined the war crimes related to the denial of a fair trial and proposed new ways of interpreting them that encourage prosecution while taking into account the realities of contemporary non-international armed conflicts.
Alongside her academic work, Diletta has contributed to several EU-funded projects on criminal justice and human rights, connecting legal research with practical impact. She also gained broad experience at the International Criminal Court, where she worked with vulnerable victims in the Office of Public Counsel for Victims, on a Defence team, and earlier in the Office of the Prosecutor.
Her research on criminalising acts of rebel governance as war crimes was awarded the 2023 Journal of International Criminal Justice Prize, and she has published in leading peer-reviewed journals on different topics related to criminal justice.
Beyond her academic and professional work, Diletta is an activist for LGBTQI+ rights and for the rights of neurodivergent people.
