Maltese Police Sergeant Completes Himalayan Trek to Support Victims of Terrorism

Maltese Police Sergeant Ryan Mifsud Schembri has completed a challenging Himalayan expedition, reaching Everest Base Camp at 5,364 metres and Kala Patthar at approximately 5,600 metres above sea level, while raising awareness and funds for victims of terrorism.

A member of the Malta Police Force for 19 years, Mifsud Schembri previously served with the Special Intervention Unit (SWAT) and the Malta Counter Terrorism Unit. He currently works as a specialist at Europol’s European Counter Terrorism Centre in the Netherlands.

Starting from Lukla, Nepal, the expedition involved eight consecutive days of trekking, with daily walks lasting approximately eight to ten hours. The demanding journey took him through remote mountain settlements and steep terrain, with increasingly thin air presenting additional physical challenges at high altitude.

Beyond the personal achievement, the trek carried a charitable purpose. Mifsud Schembri undertook the challenge to raise funds and awareness for Victim Support Europe’s Terrorism Response Network, which works to strengthen support for people affected by terrorism and ensure their rights and needs remain recognised.

His initiative highlights how a personal challenge can become an act of solidarity, helping bring greater attention to victims of terrorism and the importance of ensuring they are never left to face the consequences alone.

Ryan’s initiative is also an example of how individuals can collaborate with Victim Support Europe to raise funds and awareness for the benefit of victims of crime. By turning a personal challenge into a fundraising initiative, he demonstrates how individual efforts can contribute to strengthening victim support services and ensuring that the needs and rights of victims remain at the forefront.
