VSE Policy Update
VSE attended the kick off meeting that launched the Alliance of NGOs on Crime Prevention & Criminal Justice stakeholder WG on Cybercrime, uniting civil society, private sector, academia, and technical community to share information and offer expertise on cybercrime. It aims to gather feedback and ensure the implementation of the Cybercrime Convention.
The meeting saw a panel made up of key representatives from the Alliance of NGOs, UNODC, and the Czech Permanent Mission lead the discussion on the upcoming UN Cybercrime Convention, set to be signed in Hanoi in July, 2025. The panel noted the critical role of civil society, next steps, stakeholder participation, and practicalities of the WG, which remains voluntary and inclusive of CSOs, academia, the private sector, and tech communities.
Stakeholders emphasised the need for ongoing dialogue, open communication, and the inclusion of victim voices, while also calling for greater legal protections for cybersecurity professionals. Regular updates and meetings will be held to facilitate collaboration, ensuring that civil society remains engaged in shaping cybercrime policies at the UN level.
